About Sacred Matriarch

Our Mission

Helping people heal themselves, and the planet, through ancestral guidance, and land-based knowledge.

Finding a name…

In March 2019, I was brainstorming ideas for my business. I often receive projects, inspirations, and new paths through meditation. “Matriarch” was the word that continued to show up. I shuffled between “Matriarch Media” and a few other names but none of them sat quite right. I closed my eyes and silenced my mind chatter. “Sacred Matriarch Productions” came to me. I was hit with instant goosebumps and a petrifying fear at the responsibility just carrying that name would hold. So I did what any one else would do: opened Facebook to mindlessly scroll because I was obviously way in over my head in a big, ambitious dream-world.

I opened my feed to this photo of my great-great grandmother Suilinek on Native American History Facebook Page. I had seen it several times, but this time I was drawn to click on the comments. I found a recent comment from someone saying he had recordings of this woman from a wax cylinder. I immediately messaged him to hear it.

So there I was in 2019, looking at a digital photo of my great-great grandmother, listening to her sing the owl song (which represents a messenger of change) from my home territory. I bawled my eyes out!

In all the doubts I’ve ever had in myself, I’ve never had a clearer message come through from my ancestors. “It’s time and we’ve got you”.

Sacred Matriarch Creative was born, a legacy journey led by ancestral grandmother guidance.

Our Vision

We envision generations of seed-planters, empowered youth, and communities, Indigenous peoples sharing Indigenous stories, and Indigenous peoples leading the way in healing practices for the world.

We see economic reconciliation, healthy people, healthy land, generational healing, an abundance of resources and support for the next generations, cycle breakers, and a transition from suicide and self-harm as the leading cause of death for Indigenous peoples to old age and a long healthy, prosperous life.

Our Values
Time on the land

We are stepping into our inherent roles as stewards of the land. When we return to the land to listen, learn and feel, we return to our natural ways of knowing and being. We observe the natural rhythms which in turn teach us to tune in to our own natural rhythms.

Safe Spaces

In order to HOLD a safe space, we first need to BE a safe space. We remember to take care of ourselves so we may continue to take care of each other in a safe and sacred way. We remember to stay humble and gentle with our actions and our words. Indigenous ways of being are naturally trauma-informed and preventative, we lean in to trust these teachings and ourselves in unlearning and re-learning so we may lead and BE in a good way.

Ancestral Teachings

We lean in to trust the guidance, knowledge and stories of our ancestors. We regularly hold space to tune in, listen, dream and flow. We trust our inspired thoughts and actions. We create rituals to honour the ancestors of our own bloodlines and the ancestors of the lands we walk on.

Individual and Collective Well-Being

We value rest, play and well-being as Individuals and a Collective. We honour people over profit while practicing natural abundance and reciprocity. We trust our unique natural rhythms, seasons and cycles and commit to flowing with and trusting those cycles – especially cycles of rest and play. When we lean in to these cycles we trust that the magic and productivity flow at a higher rate than when we push productivity to the point of burnout. We commit to nourishing our well-being as an important piece of our work in the world.

Integrity/Authenticity

We hold space to show up exactly as we are, in all that we are. We understand the interconnectedness of all beings including life and business. We commit to speaking our truth and walking a path of integrity – meaning that we hold strong to our values in every decision and conversation. We hold space for different world-views and honour all walks of life in our interactions.

Indigenous Economy

We value the natural abundance of Mother Earth and Creation. We follow the models of reciprocity and respect for all beings. We see the interconnectedness of energies and practice a sacred ritual of giving our gifts and receiving in a good way. We see money as medicine and an exchange of energy in the same way we would, in historical times, trade tools and medicines.

Language

We practice speaking through a trauma-informed lens. Our language is inclusive of all beings and walks of life. We practice decolonizing and Indigenizing through our words and meanings. We acknowledge the extreme lack of depth the English language carries that currently connects us all, so we work to incorporate the languages of the land wherever we can.

Theory of Change and Perception

Our current realities are the forest fire aftermath due to our unbalanced relationships with the Earth from colonization and capitalism. The ash and dust represent the doctrine of discovery, terra nullius, colonization, capitalism, an oppressive and racist system, erased histories and genocide. The results of these current realities for Indigenous people – specifically children and youth look like: While we only make up 5% of the population, 30.6% of the homeless population are Indigenous youth, they make up 47% of incarcerated youth, 52% of children living in poverty are Indigenous, our children and youth account for 52% of the child welfare system (100% in some provinces and territories) and suicide and self-inflicted injuries are the leading cause of death for Indigenous peoples up to 44 years of age with a total life expectancy of 82 years. We know that in order to plant new healthy seeds among this burnt reality we must establish a respectful relationship with the elements once again.

In order to transition the leading cause of death for Indigenous peoples from suicide and self harm to old age, while healing the harms of colonization and capitalism on our lands and waters – we step into our inherent role to take action now for the sake of all people and the planet. We return to land-based ways of knowing and being while co-creating safe spaces and providing the tools for individual and collective healing, well-being and empowerment through suicide prevention, connection to our lands, cultures, movement, storytelling and self determination. Healing people heals the planet and we commit our work to the next 7 generations.
